X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I didn’t know what to expect.

But overall it was a decent watch.

This is the story of the X-Men character Wolverine. You get to see him as a kid and the opening credits take you along on the journey that he and his brother take through every major war in the last 150 years. The rest of the film shows how he gets his adamantium bone structure and how he basically becomes the Wolverine we know and love today.

My apprehension for this film comes from the fact that the X-Men films are great fun and they stay fairly true to their source material. I wasn’t sure if this feature would do the same.

For the most part I would say it was successful. Good storyline, good character introductions and some great fight sequences. My biggest problem with this movie is the special effects. Previous X-Men films have been spectacular when it comes to the SFX department. They’d set a bar and Wolverine was way under it. His adamantium claws looked terrible and didn’t even seem to be tracked that well. Most of the times that I saw them, I was taken out of the action and focused on these terrible looking claws.

The other really bad part was the green screen effects with the motorcycle scene. Wide shot of a guy riding on a motorcycle, cut to close-up of Hugh Jackman making faces on a fake bike, cut back to wide shot. It was terrible. Like those pathetic parachuting shots from old movies where you see the person in the sky, then it moves into the close-up of the actor with a blue screen behind them acting like they are falling.

Well, sorry Jackman, but I wasn’t buying it.

Really, other than that, it was a fun film with good action. Definitely worth the watch if you are an X-Men fan.
