The Thing
One of the greatest scifi / horror films ever made.
Always a great film.
Based on the 1938 novella “Who Goes There”, the film follows a US research team in Antarctica as they learn that a shape-shifting alien life form has infiltrated their camp. The men, consumed with paranoia, refuse to trust each other and eventually many of them are killed.
Starring that always fantastic Kurt Russell, John Carpenter did a doozy with this film. Released in 1982, when I was one year old, Carpenter did things with gore special effects that are better than a majority of motion pictures made today.
No CG, this was the real deal.
In one scene, a man’s head separates from his body as he’s moaning, then spits out a “tongue” and pulls itself to the side of the room where it is able to sprout legs and attempt to walk away. It’s so frickin rad.
I love films like this that take people in isolated vulnerable situations and make them completely distrust each other. Like zombie films, you really see what people are capable of in these terrible scenarios.
The last time I watched this film was with my daughter, Zoey Belle, the day after she was born. I don’t think she’ll remember that, but hopefully someday we will enjoy this film together again.
If you are into movies that are good and have sweet gore, check this out. If you don’t like it, punch yourself for being stupid.
