LOST – This Place is Death (s5e5)

Ding dong the witch is dead.

It took long enough, but finally, we don’t have to deal with CS Lewis anymore.

This was yet another amazing episode of LOST. The writers are really giving us quality for these last two seasons. I just wonder if they can keep this momentum up for another 12 episodes?

Anyway, This Place is Death gives us some incredible insight into the backstory of the island. Jin opens the episode and he is still with Rousseau’s team. They decide to head for the radio tower, but get stopped by our old friend Smokey along the way. Yes, he’s back and he’s in a killing mood.

So Smokey pulls one of the guys into the temple. As Rousseau’s team is going in to get him, Jin flashes forward. Next he sees what I think is some key interaction between Rousseau and her husband. She is saying that he is sick and that the monster made him that way. He responds by saying that it’s not a monster, just the security system for the temple. She lowers her gun and then he tries to shoot her. She responds by putting one between his eyes.

Holy crap. This was only the first 15 minutes.

So now we’ve seen the temple. Smokey came crawling out of the vent/hole in the side. When the guy was pulled down there, he was calling for help. What does this mean? He claimed the monster left, but why? I think it was probably a ruse to get the rest of the team down there. Rousseau, being the only one not to venture into Smoke territory, doesn’t get sick. So what is this “sickness”?

We’ve heard about it since the season one episode 9 “Solitary” in which Rousseau captures Sayid and explains how she killed her team. The fact that her husband tried to kill her tells me that some sort of brainwashing or manipulation went on. We know that Ben kidnaps Alex sometime after her birth, so that makes me wonder if the Others were currently in the temple when all this took place. I really hope we get the chance to see what took place in the temple when Jin flashed.

So Charlotte died. YES! That may sound harsh, but like Nikki and Paulo, I disliked her from the start and thought she was a distraction to the show. Before she died, at least she provided us with some quality info. She was born and raised on the island, taken off the island by her mom and told by Daniel, when she was a child, that if she ever came back, she would die. I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out who Charlotte’s parents could be. I thought for awhile that it may have been Horace and his wife, but the timelines don’t add up.

Later, Locke and Co. get to the Orchid, it flashes away and they are stuck with a well. Locke goes down the well, flash-o and Locke has leg injury #257. I loved seeing Christian/Jacob down there. Great references to how Locke was supposed to have been the one to turn the wheel. (My wife called it that it would be Christian, so I thought I would let the world know). So Locke fixes the off-kilter wheel and flashes away.

Well, frick. Does this fix the flashes? I mean, if the wheel was off its axis, then technically I would imagine that realigning it would do the trick. Why do the Others want the 6 back so bad? I guess we will know in the next couple episodes.

Is Locke going to die? My guess, yes. But I think he’s not done. I’m thinking he might be “reincarnated” as the next Jacob. We’ve seen Christian representing Jacob. I’m still not sure why. He was dead, allegedly, from the first episode and has been creeping around ever since. Does Locke have to die so that he truly can become the new leader of the Others?

So many questions, so few episodes.

*Mr. Complain addition
After thinking about this more this morning, I’ve thought about the fact that Jacob is apparently Christian, or using his body or something. Since Christian first apparently came to the island in a casket as a dead man and then was somehow transformed into Jacob, perhaps that will happen to Locke when he returns to the island in a casket. Just a thought.

Finally Red is dead. Never have liked her, but you’re right that at least she gave us some info before she kicked off.

Loved the part with Rousseau and her husband. Crazy.

I like that last thought. It does make sense that Locke will make his return when they get back to the island. To me he’s been such a big part of the whole story that he can’t really be dead forever.

I think Charlotte’s death scene was probably one of the most important scenes so far. There are so many levels to that scene. So even if you didn’t like her, she was very important in pulling together what’s going on.

For those that think she’s dead… she not, she’s still alive in the past and I guarantee we’ll see plenty more of her.

I agree about Charlotte not being dead. Like we have seen with Christian, no one is ever dead. Eckert, I am loving every min of Lost. I am so glad I am finally caught up to enjoy your insight.

Tom is so much better at predicting then I am. Although, no one really thought Jin was dead?

What I want to know is what is up with Claire?
