LOST – The Variable (s5e14)
Only 3 left this season and they are doing it right.
This was a Faraday episode. It was nice to get to see his back story with growing up with Hawking as his mom and how his destiny on the island was molded from early on.
Overall, this was a really really good episode. Good character development, interaction and plot movement. I guess my only “problem” was the fact that 99% of the reveals were obvious. Well, obvious to the rabid fan, many casual viewers would not have necessarily known all of them.
That being said, just because we knew the answers, didn’t make it any less cool when they revealed them. I loved that they finally gave us the Widmore was his dad reveal. Granted, it was basically given to us over and over this season, but closure is always nice.
Speaking of closure, Faraday is dead. That’s really too bad, because he had a great character, maybe one of the most interesting on the show. The setup with him telling Jack was a good foreshadow, but unfortunately led me to believe that Dan would die. It was good exposition, though, to explain to Jack that this is their present and they have to remember that. They are not living in their past, they are living in the past.
What does this episode mean in the grand scheme of things? Well, if we weren’t convinced Hawking was in the temporal police force, we should be now. She helped set the course of events that would kill her son. I think this goes even further to prove that you can’t change the future. If you could, Hawking would know it and she would’ve tried. The fact that she let Dan die proves that the Losties trying to detonate Jughead at the Swan will be completely in vain and whatever is meant to happen will happen.
I was a little disappointed that Dan didn’t reference paradox in his talk with Jack. Interestingly enough, he says that he’s studied this for a long time, yet fails to mention the fact that him changing the course would create a massive paradox which, if possible, could destroy the fabric of space and time. I think Dan is smarter than that. I think he knows that this course never could have actually happened. He was running on emotions at this point and not thinking clearly.
What is to come? We are going to see it hit the fan next week as DHARMA tries to figure out what the deal with the Losties is. Sawyer and Co. are basically screwed, so it’ll be interesting to see how they get out of this one. I putting it out there, again, the finale will involve the incident and will push at least most of our Losties back to the present. It’s going to be a great 2 more weeks until it’s time to take another long undeserved break.
