LOST – Some Like it Hoth (s5e13)

Wow, what I thought might be a fluff episode turned out to be really good.

I really need to start by thanking the writers for doing the Dr. Chang reveal mid-episode. It seemed realistic prior to watching this episode, but in the first 15 minutes, it was painfully obvious. If they would’ve held that to the end, I would’ve been pissed.

Anyway, in this ep we learn Myles’s backstory and it was good. Basically, he was the kid we saw in the season 5 premiere, making him Chang’s son. He and his mother left the island at some point and somehow he was able to communicate with the souls of dead people. Naomi brought Myles in to work with Widmore’s group to bring in Ben, but the “DHARMA” group tried to convince him otherwise. Granted, we still do not know that this is DHARMA, but I’m sticking with my guns on this one.

As far as reveals go, we learned some interesting points in this one. They are building the Swan in an area they aren’t supposed to be in. Seems like the Others would know if they were invading their space, but who knows, maybe they just don’t care. I was stoked to see the Swan being constructed and I think it’ll be very interesting to learn what happens with Radsinsky and how he ends up with Kelvin in the Swan after the incident and the purge. Why do the Others allow them to continue operating the Swan and honestly, can we please know why and where these food drops are coming from yet?

I loved the whole Hurley – Myles interaction. Great light comedy that made me laugh, but also moved the characters along nicely. The whole idea of Hurley writing Empire was awesome and a great reference. I think it’s great how the writers continue to use Hurley as the voice of the audience with his questions about time travel and his feeble attempts to change the future. It appears linear time travel is here to stay. That being said, we need more Hurley – Myles moments. They remind me of the good ol days with Hurley and Jin, except less broken English.

Myles had to bring the body to the Orchid. Why? My guess is that they are using the dead bodies in preliminary tests to see if they can move people through time. Seems reasonable to assume that since the real Orchid was buried so far below ground, it was probably completely prior to the actual greenhouse being built, which is what we saw tonight. We know that they were testing the time travel on rabbits, so it appears that corpses were next in line for testing. My big question is, have they tested it on live humans?

Which segues nicely into my final point of interest, our buddy Faraday reappearing. Where has he been this whole time? Ann Arbor is what they saw, but who knows what story he told them. Why would Faraday be off the island and how does this correlate to all the time traveling that we’ve seen so far?

My guess is that it might mean that Faraday and Chang decide to test the machine on him. Perhaps they are able to move him through time, but he moves through space as well and lands him back on the US. I’m not too sure, but we’ll know it in week.

Oh yeah, except that next week is a stupid recap episode. Jerks. That and the fact that it’s LOST, so it could be weeks before we really know anything.

After the van kidnapping incident tonight, I’m more convinced than ever that DHARMA is making a strong comeback and that this time traveling will be over in the next 4 episodes. If it isn’t, it’ll be wrapped right away next season to make way for the whole DHARMA resurgence thing. And oh man, is it gonna be sweet.
