LOST – LA X (s6e1&2)

LOST is finally back and soon it shall end.

At the end of season 5, we see Juliet lying at the bottom of what will soon become the Swan station. She repeatedly hits Jughead with a rock until it detonates.

Season 6 opens with the aftermath, or something, I’m still not sure.

Jack is seen on the plane, going through most of the motions that we saw in the pilot episode. Minor differences are immediately noticed as Cindy only gives him one bottle of alcohol instead of two.

As the episode continues, we see bits of this “side reality”, a new reality that appears to have been created due to the detonation of Jughead. The problem is that there are many more differences than just the plane not crashing. Charlie nearly dies in the bathroom, Hurley is now the luckiest person in the world, etc… We see all of our characters, but they aren’t quite the same.

Rumors have circulated that in this side reality, Kate has no longer murdered her father, but someone else. Jack and Locke both have missing luggage. Desmond appears briefly on the plane. There are a lot of differences and we will definitely be seeing more as time goes by.

Interestingly enough, Jack seems to be the only person that has an inkling that something’s not right. Why is that? Why does he have the scrape on his neck, but Locke doesn’t have the scar on his face? Charlie, intentionally or not, knew that he was supposed to have died.

Ok, so to get away from the side reality, holy crap, the man in black is the frickin smoke monster?!?!? What a great reveal. We’ve assumed all along that it was Smokey who was transforming into the dead people in previous seasons, but what does this reveal mean to that puzzle? Was Smokey every dead person we’ve previously seen? Eko’s brother, Christian, Ben’s mom? And how does it work?

Eko’s brother and Ben’s daughter both actually died on the island and their corpse was there. Christian died off island and we’ve only seen his empty coffin on the island. Walt isn’t dead and Ben’s mom died off island and her corpse isn’t there. Is this an oversight or a connection? I’m wondering if Jacob possibly had the ability to transform as well and perhaps he was the people who weren’t dead?

My next thought is on the Man in Black (Mib) and Jacob. From the season 5 finale, we learned that Mib wanted to kill Jacob quite badly. Then we see that Jacob’s cabin is surrounded by ash, presumably to keep Smokey out. What has caused the difference to where Jacob needs to be protected from mib and when he doesn’t? There wasn’t an ash ring around the foot and Jacob had definitely spent a lot of time there (making the tapestry).

Moving on, we have the Losties getting taken captive by the temple others. Awesome. So we now know for sure that there has been the fountain of youth element. Is this what the others are truly protecting? Is this why Jacob was seeking out good people? Jacob’s death apparently caused the cease of the fountain of youth, so there is a definite connection between his life and the eternal life/healing abilities of the island. If this water circulates throughout the island, perhaps that’s why we’ve seen Sawyer, Locke and others healing quickly from injuries while on the island.

I think the line to Richard from Mib was great about seeing him out of his chains. This seems to be a reference, to me, that Richard was originally from the Black Rock. We know that Jacob brought the Black Rock to the island and that mib wasn’t really happy about it. But how did it get onto the middle of the island and why/how was Richard sparing in this situation?

Lastly, I want to mention the Sayid resurrection. I’ve heard a lot of chatter that people think Jacob has taken over his body. An interesting theory that I’m not throwing out, but I do have a couple problems with it. It seems odd that Jacob would send Hurley to the temple for what, in the end, would be the sole purpose of killing Sayid in the fountain so that Jacob could take over his corpse. Why not provide directions through Hurley and pass them onto the others? Also, it seems like an obvious choice, which either means that we, as fans, have gotten really good at figuring this show out or the writer’s are getting lazy. I doubt it’s the latter as this show is just going to get better over the next 4 months.

Well, a long review, mostly questions, few answers, but that’s LOST. As we continue over this season and get more in-depth with the mythology, I look forward to figuring some of the answers out.
