LOST – Dead is Dead (s5e12)
Where do I even start?
Easily one of the best LOST episodes ever. We get a nice insight into Ben’s character and a great look into his backstory.
So, what do we know. Ben has one weak spot, children. Twice in this episode (Alex & Charlie) it showed that Ben did not kill someone simply based on the kid factor. I’m not sure where this angle will take us, but it’s definitely important.
Widmore was running the show until even after the purge took place. He was exiled for leaving the island and for having Penny with an outsider. I find this interesting, because Ben may not have had any off-island kids, but he definitely was leaving the island. Why wasn’t he judged for this, but only letting Alex die?
Ben bustin that cap in Caesar was one of my favorite LOST moments of all time. Not only did it come out of left field, but it was followed by a classic Ben line, “There’s your apology.” Perfect.
The entire temple / Smokey sequence was sooooo money. Ben definitely did not know about Smokey’s lair down there. You could tell he was learning by the second as he walked around and figured out what was about to happen. As for Smokey’s vents and the hieroglyph above it, here’s a link to a hi-res version of what Ben was looking at:

Looks like our buddy Anubis definitely had something going on with the people of this island, now that we’ve seen his statue / foot and the glyphs depicting him with Smokey. What exactly does this mean, though? Who were the ancients that lived on the island and why did they make these correlations?
Who lies in the shadow of the statue? What did one snowman say to another? DHARMA is classic for using riddles to identify their people. I’m guessing they’ve got a finger in some of the 316 survivors. It could be Widmore, but I personally see the DHARMA resurgence coming in full-force. Whoever they are, they had a trunk full of weapons, so they are definitely coming for a fight. Another reason I don’t think they are from Widmore is that they would’ve been prepped on who Ben is and probably would’ve been given a kill-on-sight order. They didn’t know who he was, which leads me away from Widmore.
My last thought, is Locke dead? I’m not sure why I hadn’t thought of this before, but what proof do we have the Locke is actually alive and not a representation of Locke by Smokey? I’m not even sure I believe this, but let’s look at the angles.
Locke has knowledge of things that he did not previously know (where the temple is, Smokey info, etc).
Locke is leading Ben to where he needs to go, just like Christian has led people and Yemi led Eko.
Locke has a sort of peace and clarity about him that we haven’t really seen from him in the past. Granted, this could be simply because he has died and since the island brought him back, he has complete faith that the island will protect him.

the locke being dead thing makes no sense. he apparently is the same person with all the same previous experiences. he acts human where as the people who were spirits acted as if they weren’t of this world. i’m gonna cite him still not being able to trust ben.
