LOST – What Kate Does (s6e3)
I think the easiest way to talk about these eps is by talking about each reality at a time. I’ll start with the side reality.
We see Kate taking over the cab with Claire inside. After jacking her stuff and kicking her out, she realizes Claire was preggers, so she goes back to get her. They go to the house of the family that was supposed to adopt the baby and guess what, the dude left and the woman doesn’t want the kid anymore.
This is interesting. Granted, it may have happened differently without Jughead, but the concept that Claire wanted to get to LA to get rid of the baby, but perhaps she would’ve face this same circumstance in both realities?
Anyway, Kate takes her to the hospital when she goes into labor and it would appear the Kate’s destiny is to deliver Aaron, again. While at the hospital, who do we see? Our good ol buddy Ethan in one of the best LOST juxtaposition moments of all time. He’s caring for her and telling her things about not wanting to stick her with drugs. Amazing.
Kate, meanwhile, has to continue doing what she does best, running, and semi-eagerly accepting Claire’s credit card for all the trouble she’s gone through. That’s right. Kate took the credit card of the woman that she hijacked, held a gun to and then drove to the hospital. That and the fact that she is a single mom. Kate is just being helpful and keeping Claire from dealing with the harsh reality of credit cards in today’s society.
So in our original reality, Sawyer leaves the temple to mourn Juliet’s loss. The Others send Kate, Jin and two lackies after him. Through their conversations they reveal that these people, who were on Jacob’s list, need to be in the temple. Why, though? What is the reason that Jacko and Co. are so important to the Others and why don’t the Others just come out and say it?
Perhaps it’s because if the Losties knew what it was, they wouldn’t be down with the sickness (literally). I think the Others need the Losties, but they need to use them for something and that’s why they’re keeping it all hush hush.
Back to Sawyer, he heads for Dharmaville with Kate hot on his heels. Interestingly enough, they get there in what seems like no time, but if my calculations serve me correctly, it should take at least 2 days to get to Dharmaville from the Temple. Probably just a storytelling SNAFU. So, Sawyer tells Kate that he loved Juliet and that he was going to marry her. He blames himself for her death and says that he wanted her to stay on the island so he wouldn’t be alone. Kate immediately breaks down, either feeling bad for him or selfishly realizing that his heart is with Juliet and she’s out of the love-fest.
Meanwhile, we see our buddy Sayid come back to the land of the living, not possessed by Jacob, as I predicted he would not last week. Instead, the Others test him and determine he’s claimed. First of all, “claimed” is such a rad word for it. Secondly, it was so awesome to get the tie in for the sickness that Rousseau’s been talking about since season one. The sickness that we saw afflict her team when they were drug down into the hole in the wall by Smokey. The sickness that then turned them against her and made them try and kill her.
Does this mean that Sayid will eventually snap and try to kill everyone? That would not only be great, but good luck trying to stop him.
The last time we’d seen Claire she was hanging with Mr. Smokey in the cabin and the Others alleged that she’s been claimed as well. That seems to be true since anyone who is with Smokey for awhile has been afflicted. Arguably, her saving Jin at the end garbles that up a bit, because if she were crazy and sick, she probably would’ve just blown them all away.
So that’s it. Not a ton of plot movement in this ep, but a lot of great tie-ins to previous seasons. Hopefully we’ll get some sort of Claire ep this season and we can get some back story on what the heck has been going on with her for the past three years on the island.
