Explanatory Outgoing Messages
“Hi, this is Mr. Complain, thanks for calling. I’m not in right now, or am not able to get to the phone, so if you would leave a detailed message that includes your name and a number that you can be reached at, I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks again for calling!”
Wikipedia.org alleges that the first answering machine was invented in 1935. Even if it were invented five years ago, my point is this: Everyone knows what to do when leaving a message!
Why do some many people feel the need to leave a lengthy explanatory message? How many times have you called someone, but when they didn’t explain how to leave a message, you just stared at the phone for several hours wondering what that odd beep was?
Give me a break.
I think that you can be polite and professional in your outgoing message, but guess what, we know that you need our name and number. If we don’t leave those two things, then we shouldn’t expect a call back anyway.
So the next time you go to leave your outgoing message, leave the explanations out of it. They are unnecessary and make me want to mouth-punch you.

Would you be willing to script an appropriate msg for my AOR answering machine?
